The Global Opportunities Program (Program) is an Australian Government initiative announced by the Minister for Trade, Simon Crean, MP on 5 February 2009, designed to help Australian industry sectors access export markets.
The program is delivered by the Australian Trade Commission (Austrade) in partnership with Australian Industry Group (Ai Group) and other industry organisations.
The ICT industry encompasses those businesses that produce the equipment, software and services to process deliver and display information electronically. The industry is characterised by the production of computer hardware and their preipherals, parts, components and consumables, computer software, telecommunications assets, computer services and telecommunications services.
The Australian electronics ICT industry is a key driver of productivity with strong potential for further export growth through global opportunities and new supply chains. The electronics ICT industry is one of the world's fastest growing, contributing $8.8 billion in sales revenue and $3.6 billion in exports to the Australian economy. This 'transforming' sector underpins Australian company capabilities in automotive, manufacturing, mining, communications and other key areas of Austrlia's industrial landscape.
Taiwan, in particular, is a significant key supply chain opportunity for Australian companies as it is leading global production in the electronics ICT industry. whereas the Australian market represents less than $3.6 billion of value add exports, Taiwan accounts for more than US$90 billion global production value in the electronics ICT sector. In fact, some 65% of China's electronics ICT indusry production is managed by Taiwan owned firms.
AI Group has responded to Austrade's invitation to embrace the Program, with the immediate establishment of the Autralia-Taiwan ICT Cluster (ICT Cluster) - a networking, business information and advisory hub created to deliver the Program and more economic and development initiatives to the overall ICT industry incorporating Software & Services; Technology, Hardware & Equipment; and Telecommunications Services.
With funding assistance from Austrade, the ICT Cluster is AI Group's forerunner in promoting the Government's collaborative international trade model to Australia's most important trading partners.
The ICT cluster led by Ai Group has attracted GO funding over three years to progress two specific projects, SmartTrack and HealthTrack.
Austrade and AI Group also recognise that the Program offers an exciting potential for global innovation and it is acknowlegded that ICT Cluster participants will have unparalleled access to commercialisation opportunities arising from their investment in intellectual property, time and resources in building solutions.
AI Group [with the support of Austrade] will deliver activities through the ICT Cluster based on a process of industry engagement, networking, briefings and cooperation through a defined process which includes;
AI Group will provide the best possible start for companies new to Taiwan business and enhance the infrastructure supporting business relations between Australian and Taiwanese companies. Being a member of the ICT Cluster provides business and industry advocacy, information and introductions through the following services;
Ths industry project consortium, through the SmartTrack initiative has the following goals;
It is highly anticipated that the activities of the SmartTrack consortium will culminate in a joint pilot demonstration that will promote the capabilities of Australian companies within Taiwan and the global region.
Moreover, the consortium will seek to establish a commercial entity possibly in the form of a joint-venture with Taiwan partners, which will enable key contributors to maximise the benefit of investing their intellectual property, time and resources in building the solutions.
This industry project consortium, through the HealthTrack initiative has the following goals;
An early objective of the HealthTrack Consortium will be a demonstration of how the combination of Australian decision support technology with Taiwanese medical devices, advanced hardware and telcommunication "know how" can dramatically improve health care services.
The demonstration will seek the assistance of the ROC Ministry of Health and other Government agencies and may also extend to other existing health service providers.
The demonstration will be of relevance, not only to Taiwan but also the whole Asian region and globally.
